A week with family in Kerala is perfect for a mixed age group with plenty of interest for young children and adults in the party. The climate and temperate and so conducive to being outside in the beautiful environment for which Kerala is famous. Mix time in the cool hill station of Munnar with two nights in Thekkady – a chance to see the exotic wildlife – a day and night stay aboard a classic Kerala houseboat at Alleppey before heading to the stunning coast at Kovalam. Surely, there is something for everyone.
The scenery is lush and accessible for those who want to commune with nature. If you fancy something a little less strenuous, relax in the tea gardens with a famous brew or on the golden sands of Kovalam’s picturesque beaches. Be ready to make memories, whether you are a family with children or a couple intent on romance – Kerala will not disappoint.
Day 1: – Kochi Airport to Munnar
Our representative will greet you at the airport and whisk you away in a chauffeur-driven car to Munnar. There are plenty of opportunities for little ones to get out and stretch their legs as this journey time is around four hours so your driver will stop for comfort breaks. The scenery is spectacular, and you can linger awhile at the Neriamangalam bridge for a view of the Periyar River and also at the falls at Cheeyappara and Valara. Your first night will be spent in luxury in your resort at Munnar.
Day 2: Munnar sightseeing
Munnar sits at the confluence of three mountain streams so as well as being very pretty, offers some beautiful and unique green l terrain ideal for exploration. Boat, raft, bike or horse ride for those with an adventurous spirit.
Enjoy a family picnic to tourist destination in Munnar at the lake at Mattupetty, the children will love watching the cattle as they come down to drink. Visit Echo Point, not just for the views, call your name and hear the echo return, irresistible for all ages. For those keen on animals, a visit to Eravikulam National Park is an opportunity to spot different and rare species in the Kannan Devan hills of Munnar. Munnar also has some more sedate and tranquil occupations for older members of the group. There is an interesting Tea Museum with plenty of historic relics from India’s colonial past and a gentle stroll can take you to the Tea Gardens.
Day 3: Munnar to Thekkady
Thekkady is home to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, a National Park encompassing nearly 800 square kilometers. Enjoy the beautiful scenery or head towards Lake Periyar and take a cruise, a marvelous and unobtrusive way to see the wildlife that comes down to drink at the water’s edge. Observe elephants, deer, lion-tailed macaques and a host of other species before heading to your accommodation in genuine bungalows, coffee planter style.
Day 4: Thekkady sightseeing
A host of exciting activities waits for your day in Thekkady. Boating, rafting or trekking are some of the best activities in thekkady to take in the amazing surroundings, tickets can be booked in advance so you can just get on with your day with no waiting around. No visit to Thekkady would be complete without visiting Elephant Junction. Take a thirty-minute elephant ride or watch the elephants having their daily bath. There are lots of activities for children as well to keep them entertained. Complete your day with a campfire meal in the evening sunshine and a traditional Kathakali Martial Arts show.
Day 5: Thekkady to Alleppey (Houseboat)
Children will love your floating home for the next twenty-four hours. A traditional Kerala houseboat complete with thatch will wind its way around the backwaters and paddy fields, meandering through enclaves of local people who earn their living by fishing or making coir products and gifts. Eat on deck and then stay overnight in a well-appointed cabin, sleeping on the water is such a uniquely special experience. This is ideal for romantic couples or newlyweds, but children will adore this part of the tour too.
Day 6: Alleppey (Houseboat) to Kovalam
For beach lovers, the beautiful golden sands at Kovalam will offer one of the best beach experiences in Kerala A choice of three beaches in the bay, the largest aptly named Lighthouse Beach after the 30-metre Lighthouse or head for the seclusion of Samudra. Each beach is separated by a jutting finger of rock and is the perfect seaside playground for the family. Relax with a book or play cricket and volleyball, there are plenty of restaurants and cafes and you easily hire equipment such as beach umbrellas. The sunsets are spectacular at Kovalam and not to be missed.
Day 7: Kovalam to Kanyakumari
Staying Coastside, your seventh day will be spent heading at Kanyakumari after you have bid farewell to Kovalam. Three oceans converge here. Spend many happy hours on the beach with the children trying to spot the different waters of the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean.
Kanyakumari is also a terribly romantic spot at sunrise and sunset, a very special location for a honeymoon or special couple’s trip. The waters are said to have holy properties. The bay is dominated by the huge Thiruvalluvar statue, a memorial to the poet and philosopher, Valluvar. There is also a memorial here to Mahatma Gandhi. A boat trip can ferry you to the rock where they are located.
Day 8: Kovalam to Trivandrum
Your final day will be spent in Trivandrum. Visit the Kuthiramalika Palace which literally means, ‘the Palace of the Horses’, named after the frieze of 122 horses on the exterior walls. The Palace which was built in 1840 demonstrates typical Kerala architecture of pillared verandahs and cool courtyards with long, sloping roofs. It sits on the south- eastern side of the Padmanabhaswamy Temple, which is another tourist attraction, open to visitors from 4 pm in the afternoon. Pilgrims must wear traditional dress as a mark of respect. For little people, there is the Veli Tourist village with lots of water-based fun and entertainment or maybe you fancy a trip to Trivandrum Zoo. Your chauffeur will return you to the airport at Kochi in good time for your return flight home, your bags bursting with souvenirs and your digital devices packed with images of many treasured and happy memories of your time in Kerala.
